Assertive vs. Aggressive: Know the Difference
Many people, especially women, fear being labeled “bossy” if they assert themselves. There’s a crucial distinction to understand.
Not knowing how to be assertive healthily leads to either staying silent or full-on aggression.
- Focus on the ‘what’, not the ‘who’: “This project is behind schedule” vs. “You’re incompetent”.
- “I” statements are your friend: “I need this by Friday” not “You always drop the ball”
- Body language matters: Firm eye contact, open posture, calm tone. These convey confidence, not anger.
- Don’t apologize for your needs: Simply state them in a clear, neutral way.
- Start small to build confidence: Assertively asking for the quiet table at a restaurant is a good warmup.
- Respect is a two-way street: Be assertive, but also be willing to honestly listen to the other side.
What’s one area of your business where you need to be MORE assertive?
In your next meeting, make a point to state your opinion clearly, even if it differs from others.
