The Worst Assumption I Ever Made: I Didn't Need Insurance

I thought that my business was low-risk and didn’t require any insurance coverage.

Why I was Mistaken:

  • Unexpected Events: Accidents, natural disasters, lawsuits, and other unforeseen events can happen to any business, regardless of perceived risk.
  • Financial Protection: Insurance provides a financial safety net that can protect your business from significant losses and liabilities.
  • Compliance Requirements: Some types of insurance are legally required, depending on your industry and location. Ignoring these requirements can result in fines and legal issues.

What I Did:

  • Property Damage: A minor fire in my office caused significant damage. Without property insurance, the repair costs came out of my pocket, straining my finances.
  • Liability Claims: A client filed a lawsuit over an alleged service error. The legal fees and potential settlement were overwhelming without liability insurance.

Do This Instead:

  • Assess Risks: Conduct a thorough risk assessment of your business to identify potential hazards and liabilities.
  • Consult with an Insurance Professional: Seek advice from an insurance professional to determine the appropriate types and levels of coverage for your business.
  • Regularly Review Coverage: Regularly review and update your insurance policies to ensure they align with your evolving business needs and risk profile.
